Nobody can argue that we don’t live in interesting times, with crime rampant from the lowest echelons of society to the highest. From the poorest to the richest, we are all impacted by crime almost every day and we all have one question in common – what are we going to do about it?
The current state of security systems in South Africa
Traditionally, the options available from the security industry were intruder detection based systems, such as private-space based alarms, early warning external alarm systems, outdoor beams and electric fences. This approach, however, has changed rather dramatically in the last couple of years to intruder identification systems such as biometric, facial recognition and retina based access control systems. This also includes CCTV systems, with video analytics the sharpest tool in the toolbox.
Since then however, technological advancements have seen the capabilities of CCTV improve manyfold. The move from film based systems to digital data processing via a hard drive (either mounted in an Embedded Digital Video Recorder or Windows based CCTV System) means the footage captured is more reliable and the property protected is much safer. This is especially true with the integration of CCTV systems into broader based security systems, which has become particularly popular with for private residences as well as for commercial and industrial use.
What is the best CCTV system to buy?
This brings us to the question of ‘What is the best CCTV System to buy?’, or more importantly – “What CCTV system do I actually need?”
In order to answer that, we need to investigate what types of systems there are on the market:
- Analogue CCTV Systems,
- Analogue HD or AHD CCTV System
- IP CCTV Systems
Analogue CCTV Systems
These systems have been available for a number of years now but as a technology, they are slowly making way for IP (or network-based systems). While it is true that analogue systems use digital technology in the form of a hard disk drive to process data, the majority of the devices are outdated and therefore produce images of a lower quality compared to the definition of newer cameras. As a result of this, one benefit of analogue systems is that they are generally cheaper compared to some newer models.
Hybrid Analogue/IP CCTV Systems
Over time, the industry (which Hikvision Systems leads) developed an interim technology to facilitate the baton switch to full-on IP systems. This was because IP systems were extremely expensive at first, which is a (literal) price you have to pay when dealing with newly developed technology.
This interim technology, or ‘Turbo-based’ CCTV systems, were mainly developed by Hikvision Systems and use the digital CCD (Charged Coupled Device) of newer network cameras on a digital camera with analogue outputs. This utilizes current analogue infra structure (the cabling) to deliver near-IP quality to the data being viewed and recorded; all at very reasonable prices. Quality is also measured in megapixels (2MP, for instance) as opposed to ‘lines per area’ which is used for analogue recordings.
IP Based CCTV Systems
These systems use IP networks as infrastructure, with both the camera and recording facilities digital in design and layout. The CCD and outputs of the camera are now completely IP based and the recording facilities range from NVR’s (Network Video Recordings) to server based systems used in high security environments. These can often run off specialist 3rd party software programs which may include advanced capabilities, such as video analytics.
What CCTV systems would the professionals recommend?
One needs to look no further than Hikvision CCTV Systems. Hikvision is the world’s largest manufacturer of CCTV systems and by some margin as well. Their products can be found all over the world, from the highly protected palaces of the very rich to simple one camera systems in remote areas of Africa.
If this has sold you on Hikvision products, we here at Motiontech Security Solutions stock their products almost exclusively as our experience on literally thousands of installations and projects has taught us that no company does it better. As a company that shares the same excellent pricing, after sales services and product quality as us, we are happy to work so closely with them and we believe strongly that Hikvision, SensorSA and Motiontech are an unbeatable combination.
